Samurai
Hans Kleinjan - Acrylic & oil paint on ceramic - 40 x 30 x 20 cm - 2020
The basis of this artwork is two ceramic sculptures in the shape of figurines from Las Meninas (the Ladies in waiting), based on a 1656 painting in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, by Diego Velázquez, the leading artist of the Spanish Golden Age.
Samurai was commissioned by a private collector and art enthusiast, granting AAA full artistic freedom to add their sentiment to this object. In order to do so Hans Kleinjan reduced the elegance of this ceramic object into raw sharp shards and using these components resurrected it into Samurai.
After 6 months of careful reconstruction using materials and techniques from his dentistry practice the canvas was born. Hereafter, Samurai was filled with the signature explosion of colour that defines the AAA art movement Maniacism.
Samurai is currently on exhibition at Dock Gallery, Rotterdam, a center piece of the collection ‘Everything in the Cloud’.
